Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a foundational Lean tool for visualizing and analyzing the end-to-end flow of materials and information required to deliver a product or service. Originating in Toyota’s Production System (as the material-and-information flow diagram), VSM has been widely adopted across industries (manufacturing, healthcare, services, software) to identify waste and design smoother, faster value streams.
A typical VSM initiative begins with mapping the current state (capture how work actually flows, with data on cycle time, inventory, lead time, etc.) and then creating a future-state map that envisions improved flow (pull, balanced workload, reduced queues). By exposing delays and non-value-added steps, VSM drives targeted Lean/Six Sigma improvements that have delivered substantial results (e.g. cutting lead times by 30–70%, doubling throughput in some cases).
This whitepaper provides a detailed overview of VSM fundamentals, symbols, methodology, metrics, tools, and case studies across sectors, along with guidance on pitfalls and an implementation roadmap.
