Whenever fluid flows through a pipeline, energy is continuously dissipated due to friction between the fluid and the pipe wall, disturbances created by fittings and valves, and changes in elevation. These losses appear as pressure drop. In engineering terms, pressure represents stored energy, and every reduction in pressure means that pumps or compressors must supply additional energy to maintain the desired flow rate.
